Pazuzu is one of the most recognizable figures in ancient Mesopotamian mythology, depicted as a fearsome wind demon. Despite his intimidating appearance, he was believed to protect people from evil spirits, disease, and the demoness Lamashtu, which is why his image was often used as a protective amulet. Pazuzu became world-famous through The Exorcist (1973). In the film, his ancient statue is discovered during an archaeological excavation in Iraq, and Pazuzu is portrayed as the demon responsible for the possession of the young girl, Regan MacNeil.
