*A sculpture inspired by the figure of Joseph Carey Merrick (1862–1890), an Englishman known for severe physical deformities. Merrick was exhibited in freak shows under the pseudonym “The Elephant Man,” and later came to live at the London Hospital in Whitechapel, where he was under the care of the surgeon Frederick Treves. During his stay at the hospital, he engaged in artistic activity, creating, among other things, architectural models(...)
His life was depicted in the play The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance and in the film The Elephant Man directed by David Lynch.
